Every week or two after her initial visits to Verona’s prison, Coura returned to question Hendal. At first, the man’s life story sounded like an excuse to cover up what she hoped to hear about Soirée, which bored Irwin enough for him to begin staying at his desk instead of listening nearby. Of course, the ex-high priest wouldn’t skip ahead when they were alone.

Still, her hatred quelled significantly once she learned what drove him to live in Verona and especially how his magical potential had been dismissed. During that time of internal distress, he met Jaspire and the other, rogue angels, who encouraged him to pursue their twisted idea of justice. Soirée took advantage of their appearance in Dala to join Hendal after, manipulating the man’s views on what was fair and how he could use her power to bring about his goals.

As much as it made her sick to acknowledge, the situation resonated with her more than she expected. I accepted Soirée’s deal because I had no other option except to become her puppet, or at least that’s what I thought. She sealed my Yeluthian power away in order to force me to wield dark magic stemming from her demonic energy. When we were separated, she still kept some control over me by threatening innocent lives all to use me as a means of experimenting with her kind and the angels. Both Hendal and I are haunted by the memories of Soirée, not because she remained an outside threat, but because she wormed her way inside our minds.

“As for the rest of my account, I’m sure you heard about it from Byron,” the man went on as he recapped his time in the palace. Instead of a crazed or spiteful tone, he just sounded tired. “I lost and was captured, then they threw me in this cell to rot. Nothing new has happened since you arrived.”

Coura shifted her weight to the other leg when the basement fell silent and observed the hunched figure slouching at the end of the bed. Nothing about him looked intimidating whatsoever. “You didn’t tell me anything I haven’t heard before or new information that’s relevant to what I need to know.”

“I warned you what I shared might not be helpful.”

“You did,” she replied without hiding her frustration. “Why couldn’t you answer my questions instead of wasting my time then?”

To her surprise, he glanced upward with a natural, sincere smile. “We’re all alone, aren’t we? The rest of the guards rotate, but Irwin prefers to stay here where he doesn’t work too hard. I figured when I bored him enough with Kercher and the palace life he would leave so no one would bother you if you continued to return just to hear me ramble.”

So, I was right about that part.

“There is another reason,” he continued in an even more defeated manner as he tore his eyes away from her. “You can see how I’m treated by the guards. Having company who listens instead of lashing out immediately is a blessing I’ve been fortunate enough to experience with you.
